NEOM is a broader concept and which stands for “New Future” and “New Enterprise Operating Model.” The Main aim of this company is an economic hub of 26,500 km2 will be built along the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia and the Aqaba Gulf. Many people’s dreams come true when they join forces with NEOM to create a new sustainable living model. Instead of constructing a smart city, NEOM aims to create a cognitive city in which cutting-edge technology is infused with data and intelligence, allowing it to communicate with its inhabitants in real-time.

Neom, short for Neo-Mustaqbal”  (meaning “New Future”). Neom is an amazing project to create a new city, initiated by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The city  is located in the northwest of the country, spanning over 26,500 square kilometers, which is approximately the size of Belgium. It will be positioned along the Red Sea, offering beautiful coastlines and abundant marine life. This city will be all about using technology and taking care of the environment. It will be a place where people can live comfortably, work on new ideas, and enjoy the wonders of nature. One of the main objectives of Neom is to diversify the Saudi Arabian economy and reduce its dependence on oil.  The goal of Neom is to be a model for future urban development, emphasizing sustainability, technological innovation, and quality of life.

What are the Regions of NEOM?

The different regions or projects within Neom:

According to the available information, Neom consists of ten projects that are referred to as regions by the developers. So far, details of four of the regions have been announced. These regions are:

  1. The Line: A 170 km-long, zero-carbon city that will be home to a million people. It will run on 100% renewable energy and be powered by solar and wind energy. The Line is expected to be completed by 2025.
  2. Sindalah: Sindalah is a  luxury island destination in the Red Sea that is due to open in 2024. It will offer a unique destination for visitors.
  3. Trojena: A region that will focus on mobility and logistics, with a port and an airport. It will increase the city’s transportation infrastructure and facilitate trade.
  4. Oxagon: A region that will focus on water and food security, with a focus on agriculture and aquaculture. It will contribute to the city’s self-sufficiency and sustainability.

The remaining six regions have not been announced yet. Neom is being developed to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil, diversify its economy, and develop public-service sectors. The project is being largely bankrolled by the Public Investment Fund, which invests funds on behalf of the government of Saudi Arabia, and the estimated cost exceeds $500 billion. The completion of Neom is expected to be a gradual process over the next decade, with significant milestones reached by 2025 and 2030.

Where Neom is located?

What are the best times of year to visit Neom?

Neom’s weather is typically hot and arid like the rest of Saudi Arabia, making the cooler winter months from November to February the best time to visit. However, Neom is a year-round destination, with temperatures averaging around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) year-round, making it possible to indulge in sunbathing and various beach activities at any time.

Sindalah Island, the first physical showcase of Neom, is set to open at the end of this year. By the end of 2025, Neom aims to target from 800,000 to a million people coming here for a holiday, and by 2030, the aim is to see five million people coming here.

What are the features of the Neom City in Saudi Arabia?

  1. An area of 26,500 square kilometres is planned for the project, which will connect Jordan and Egypt via Saudi Arabia.
  2. 380,000 jobs are expected to be created and $48 billion (INR 36,000 crore) will be added to the Kingdom’s GDP as a result of this project by 2030.
  3. The Crown Prince referred to the project as a “civilisational plan that places human needs first.” “The Line” is designed as a linear city for one million people, running 170 kilometres long and having a walkable width of five minutes.
  4. There will be a free trade zone in the entire NEOM area, including “The Line,” which will have its own tax structure and legal system.
  5. Infrastructure and services are organised into three layers in the city An elevated pedestrian layer is planned for the uppermost level.
  6. There are two layers of physical infrastructure: those above ground and those beneath it. The spine layer for transport will be located below the service layer.
  7. Twenty minutes is the target time for the city’s new high-speed transit system.
  8. With the Line, the city would be free of pollution, healthy, and long-lasting thanks to its use of only clean, renewable energy. Smart city technologies would be used to run the entire city.
  9. There will be robots in security, logistics, home delivery, and health care provision.
  10. Currently, all that can be seen in the desert is a square-shaped structure, as depicted by a satellite image. Additionally, there are two swimming pools and a football field on property.
  11. It will become the first self-sufficient food city. It is hoped that by implementing NEOM, we will be able to drastically alter how we produce and consume food in the future.

How Neom City will become self-sufficient food city?

It is NEOM’s goal to develop a food system that is both sustainable and profitable by the year 2023, even in the face of increasingly difficult environmental conditions.

  • Open field operations cover 6,500 hectares.
  • Aquaculture production facilities covering 3,000 hectares.
  • Cutting-Edge Food Park of 100 hectares.
  • Innovative Vertical Farms and Greenhouses cover 18 hectares of land.
  • To encourage the development of novel foods and alternative proteins, encourage the development of food processing and bioreactor parks.
  • Incorporating genomic and microbiome technologies into personalized nutrition plans can help people make better food choices for themselves.

How NEOM will utilize the water system?

NEOM’s water needs will be met entirely by desalination, which will be powered entirely by renewable energy. The brine left over from the desalination process will be used to produce high-value chemicals and minerals that can be used in industry.
As a world first, we are committed to an integrated resource recovery seawater treatment (FIRRST) system. Wastewater will be recycled in its entirety and put to good use as an irrigation system.
We’re on a mission to extract cellulose, nutrients, grit, and biogas from wastewater and biosolids. Landscaping, agriculture, and construction will all benefit from these, as well as helping to reduce energy consumption.

The following procedure will be implemented

  • The seawater desalination plant is at the heart of this transformation, and it is a massive facility that is integrated with brine processing. Within 10 years, these innovations will be able to process up to 1,000,000 m3 of water per day.
  • The neom circular water economy relies on brine processing to produce high-value chemicals, minerals, and metals for industrial and agricultural use from seawater desalination waste.
  • There will be portable water reservoirs capable of supplying five days of demand across NEOM’s smart water network. Over 100,000 m3 of safe, high-quality drinking water will be stored in concrete structures in most of these reservoirs.
  • Every NEOM region will be supplied with water via a 600km network of carbon steel pipelines, valves, utility and pipeline culverts, from coast to desert.
  • By the end of 2024, up to 20 pumping stations will be operational, and six major water reservoirs will be built over the next four years, with a total storage capacity of 6,000,000 m3.
  • NEOM’s sustainable and innovative wastewater management strategy calls for collecting, treating, and reusing all of the facility’s wastewater.
  • NEOM’s circular water management is based on recycling, reusing, and recovering resources.

Clearly Neom is a part of this plan. Saudi Arabia has so far avoided making the most difficult decision of all – abandoning the production of fossil fuels.
The attempt to expel the 20,000-strong Howeitat tribe from its centuries-old homeland, which lies within NEOM territory, has also brought the Saudi government into disrepute. There is a strong resistance from the tribe. Several of the tribe’s top leaders were arrested after they protested. Although there are still doubts about Neom’s ability to live up to its stated goals.

The development of Neom is not only a significant step towards diversifying the Saudi Arabian economy but also a milestone in urban planning and sustainable development. By implementing technology, renewable energy, and nature conservation, Neom aims to be a model for future cities all around the world. If successful, Neom could serve as a blueprint for sustainable urban development worldwide, inspiring other countries to follow suit.
